Background of the Study
Small-scale palm oil processing represents a significant economic activity in many parts of Nigeria, contributing to rural development and household income. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, traditional palm oil processing remains a primary source of livelihood for many communities. Recent studies have demonstrated that while small-scale operations can promote economic self-sufficiency, they also face challenges related to technological limitations, quality control, and market access (Obi, 2023). This study investigates the economic sustainability of small-scale palm oil processing by analyzing production methods, supply chain dynamics, and financial performance. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between traditional practices and modern innovations, assessing how improvements in technology and market integration can enhance sustainability. The research also considers the role of government policies and local cooperatives in supporting the sector, aiming to provide actionable recommendations for increased productivity and economic resilience (Ejiogu, 2024). The findings will offer insights into the potential for scaling up operations while preserving cultural and traditional methodologies (Amadi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Small-scale palm oil processors in Ikom face numerous challenges including outdated technology, limited access to markets, and inconsistent quality standards, which collectively hinder economic sustainability (Okon, 2023). These challenges result in reduced productivity and income instability for local households. The absence of structured support and policy interventions exacerbates the situation, preventing the sector from achieving its full economic potential. This study aims to evaluate these challenges and identify sustainable practices that can revitalize the small-scale palm oil industry (Udo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the current state of small-scale palm oil processing in Ikom.

  2. To identify challenges affecting economic sustainability.

  3. To propose strategies for technological and market improvements.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the main challenges faced by small-scale palm oil processors?

  2. How do technological limitations affect productivity?

  3. What strategies can enhance the economic sustainability of the sector?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Modernization of processing techniques increases production efficiency.

  2. H₂: Access to improved markets positively influences income stability.

  3. H₃: Government support enhances the overall sustainability of the industry.

Significance of the Study
This study is vital for informing policy and practical interventions in the small-scale palm oil sector, promoting sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods in Ikom. Its findings will help align traditional practices with modern technologies, ensuring long-term sector resilience (Chinonso, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating small-scale palm oil processing and its economic sustainability in Ikom Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local production methods and market dynamics.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Small-Scale Processing: Production activities conducted on a limited, community-based scale.

  2. Economic Sustainability: The ability to maintain economic viability over time.

  3. Palm Oil Processing: The extraction and refinement of oil from palm fruits.
